The incident has sparked accusations from the Venezuelan government and demands for global action. Venezuela Accuses United States of Attack Venezuela's authoritarian regime has blamed the US of an act of "imperialist aggression," alleging that ex- President Trump supposedly authorized strikes against the South American state. In an public announcement, the government stated that strikes had impacted the capital and several other provinces: Miranda state, La Guaira state, and Aragua state. "The primary goal of these strikes is to gain control of Venezuela's strategic resources, notably its oil and resources," the government asserted. The government called on the global community to censure the operations, which it termed a "blatant breach of international norms" that put countless of civilians in peril. Reports of Blasts and Defense Bases Targeted Eyewitnesses reported experiencing at least multiple explosions around 2:00 AM local time. Citizens in different districts reportedly ran into the streets. "The whole ground shook. It was horrible. We heard explosions and planes in the sky," stated one witness. Plumes of smoke was observed pouring from two military installations in Caracas: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base military base, where leader Nicolás Maduro is thought to reside. International Condemnation The leader of bordering Colombia, stated on a social platform that "Right now they are attacking Caracas... attacking it with projectiles." He demanded an immediate emergency session of the Security Council. Colombia, which recently joined the Security Council, said it would activate operational measures at its border with Venezuela. Preceding Events The reported strikes follow a prolonged military buildup by the US against the Venezuelan regime. Since August, authorities reported a substantial American military deployment off Venezuela's northern coast and a number of air strikes on vessels linked to illegal activities. Venezuela's administration has announced "a state of external disturbance" and commanded all national defence protocols to be activated. It has also summoned its citizens to protest and "repudiate this imperialist attack." American officials and the Defense Department have not immediately responded to requests for a statement regarding the reports.
