Igor Jesus found the net on two occasions as the Premier League side concluded the group stage of the Europa League with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

The hosts had previously guaranteed a place in the next qualifying round and entered this fixture with a small chance of reaching the top eight, even though they needed other matches to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give Forest fans belief that their side can come through the two-legged play-off to reach the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a headed effort inside the opening stages for the visitors – coached by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by Bence Otvos and doubled the lead shortly after – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the back post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

The forward's 11th came soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to break clear of the backline and then place a shot past the shot-stopper.

That goal ended Ferencvaros' hopes of making a comeback and instead the hosts scored again when the impressive James McAtee converted a penalty after a infringement by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition qualifying round draw takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Nottingham Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or Panathinaikos.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these guys to do well as a unit, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another stride forward, but it is a positive one."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this season with half of his eleven strikes coming in the Europa League.

This double also means he has scored three goals in his previous two outings and the prospect of a challenge for his position in attack could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week brought in temporarily and he was observing this game from the directors' box.

This development may well have been on the striker's mind as he was impressive against Ferencvaros, producing two excellent finishes and overall being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his pace and runs.

Jesus was not the only one in impressing, with McAtee turning in his finest display in a Forest jersey since joining from the champions last summer, while the Swiss international also impressed.

These encouraging performances will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome their London rivals on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a response," continued Dyche.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their loyalty or honesty. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan was super sharp. Igor got another couple and these are good signs."
