Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as serious yet stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “Yet I must mention, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

Authorities issued video stills earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The attack took place around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “constantly” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has remained around the team all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
