This situation demands a robust reaction from capitals across Europe. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their pushback, others—like British officials—have continued with a strategy of attempting to appease the U.S. administration.

On Tuesday, a Downing Street spokesperson declined to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his latest criticism on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.
