The second and third largest nationalities to have vanished from the two settings are Afghan nationals followed by Iranian nationals.

Advocacy representatives highlighted that when representing children who have broken free after being trafficked whilst vanished, they see how their psychological and bodily well-being is permanently harmed by the mistreatment they endure during this time.

"If just one youth to disappear signifies an complete breakdown of the state to protect the most fragile and mistreated in their care. These numbers are in the multiple hundreds."

Necessary Steps to Address the Situation

Advocates said more needed to be done to find the missing children. "Minors have not opted to vanish. These children should be participating in activities in the park and getting ready for their GCSEs, not servicing trafficking gangs in conditions we know involve being restrained, harmed and exploited, and disciplined by being starved of food."

Policy Shifts and Ongoing Concerns

In December 2023, after a long-running legal proceeding concerning lone child asylum seekers missing from all temporary accommodations, the procedure of regularly housing children in hotels was deemed improper.

Instead, officials committed to increase protection for these children by enlarging the use of welcome hubs. Following that legal decision an additional 44 children have gone missing from such locations, with 10 still missing and 34 located.

"Once a child does vanish, the danger that they are being mistreated grows markedly and they are undoubtedly more susceptible to abuse and illegal trade."

We carry on regularly review our methods for developments if this occurs, providing pertinent data with regional law enforcement and municipal agencies looking into the matter."
