When I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of throughout the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. Yet, the most difficult person to convince didn't come from a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the best player in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

That decision set him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and being named best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Ambitions

At Monaco, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I am very at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, yet remains determined about winning the senior Africa Player of the Year in the future.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it gives you belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the world of football.
